Driving yourself
Cheapest on paper and often the most expensive in practice. The fuel is trivial; the parking is not. SFO's long-term lots are charged per day, so a week away turns a free drive into a three-figure bill before you have paid for anything else.
The real cost is the return leg. Landing at eleven at night and facing an hour on I-80 is the part people forget when they book the flight.
Rideshare
Genuinely cheaper than us on a good day, and unpredictable on a bad one. Three things move the price: surge, the time of day, and whether a driver will accept a sixty-mile run out of Solano County at all.
The 4am departure is where it breaks down. That is the busiest hour for airport runs and the thinnest hour for available drivers, which is exactly when surge multipliers bite. It is also when a cancelled ride is hardest to replace.
- No guarantee a driver accepts the distance
- Car seats are the driver's choice, not a service
- Price is only known at the moment you book
- A cancellation at 4am has no fallback
Public transport
There is no direct route. Any combination involves a connection into the Bay Area and then BART to SFO, which works if you are travelling light, in daylight, and not against a check-in deadline.
With luggage, at dawn, or with children, it stops being a serious option.
A private shuttle
Every rate is flat and quoted before you book — put the pickup and the airport into the booking form and it comes straight back, no phone call needed. The price is agreed before you travel.
Where we win is certainty rather than price: a fixed number, a driver contractually committed to being there, car seats fitted before you come outside, and enough room for the luggage you are actually bringing.
So which one
Travelling alone, mid-morning, hand luggage only, and comfortable with a variable price: rideshare will usually be cheaper, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
Two or more people, an early departure, real luggage, car seats, or a trip long enough that airport parking adds up: a private ride is usually both cheaper and considerably less stressful once you count everything.
